With Unemployment Claims at 25-Year High, Business Leaders Outsourcing UI Claims Management at a Record Pace

by Tom Ahearn 12/16/2008 3:34:00 PM

According to a recent New York Times article, unemployment claims in the U.S. reached their highest levels in a quarter of a century as initial applications for unemployment insurance claims rose to 573,000 – the most since November 1982 – causing some states to run out of the money needed to pay unemployment claims benefits. These states are now turning to the federal government for loans to make the federally guaranteed payments for unemployment claims while also increasing taxes on businesses, forcing business leaders to re-evaluate their unemployment insurance claims management systems.

According to the National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA), thirty states are at risk of running out of money to pay unemployment claims benefits over the next few months due to the record high number of unemployment claims. Funds in Indiana and Michigan have already dried up and both states are borrowing from the federal government. California, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and other states are fast approaching insolvency and may need to borrow from the federal government to get through the first quarter of 2009.

Business leaders in these states, already overwhelmed by massive amounts of unemployment claims, must now face the possibility of higher taxes, often through an automatic increase triggered when funds for unemployment claims are endangered. In order to maximize profitability in these tough economic times, business leaders are choosing to outsource their unemployment claims management at a record pace, a solution that costs less than in-house administration, minimizes tax obligations, reduces hearing-level unemployment claims, and streamlines the unemployment claims management processes.
