Employers, are your unemployment claims out of control?
According to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Labor, the number of “mass” layoffs – the firing of at least 50 workers from a single workplace – has reached record levels. In addition, mass layoffs and their associated initial unemployment claims also reached their highest levels on record in March 2009, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The number of mass layoffs rose 85 percent year-over-year in March 2009 to almost 3,000, and initial unemployment claims associated with mass layoffs rose more than 85 percent to nearly 300,000 workers, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released by the bureau.
In today's tough economy, many employers who have terminated or laid off workers worry about the legal troubles that may result, such as potential lawsuits or discrimination complaints. Unfortunately, they sometimes forget to prepare for a much more common threat: rising, out-of-control unemployment claims.
Unemployment claims expenses have skyrocketed in the current recession, but many organizations don't know how to track, benchmark, and contest these costs – or assume that most unemployment claims filed by out-of-work employees are rubber stamped for approval. Pre-Employ.com – a nationwide leader in background screening solutions – offers employers assistance with our Unemployment Claims Management service.
