Webinar Shows “Background Screening Best Practices” in Health Care Industry a Matter of Life and Death

by Tom Ahearn 9/30/2009 3:00:00 PM

In the health care industry, patients put their lives in the hands of trusted caregivers every day. The importance of background screening for current and potential health care staff members goes beyond cost, compliance, and legal liability issues. It can be a matter of life or death.

To provide effective background screening solutions and training in best practice guidelines that will ensure the safety of patients and health care staff, the Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC) and Pre-Employ.com, a nationwide leader in background screening services, have co-presented a complimentary webinar titled “Background Screening Best Practices” that is currently available for on demand viewing at http://www.pre-employ.com/webinars/Healthcare-Webinars.aspx.

Guest speakers Teri Hollingsworth, Vice President of HR services for HASC, and Mike Wharton of Pre-Employ.com, explain why it is imperative that ALL health care employees – from doctors to the hospital’s maintenance workers, whether new hires or existing staff – undergo criminal background screening during the hiring process, and the webinar “Background Screening Best Practices” includes a broad overview of background screening policies and covers several key points:

  • “The Importance of Background Screening” reveals three critical reasons why health care providers should have both prospective hires and their existing employees undergo background screening: danger to patients, danger to staff, and patient lawsuits that can cost millions.
  • “Case Study” of Charles Cullen, who murdered as many of 40 patients through lethal injection while working as a health care provider at several different facilities.
  • “Best Practices” procedures that are the most efficient and effective way of accomplishing a task based on repeatable procedures that have been proven successful in achieving a desired outcome over a long period of time, and for a large amount of people.
  • “Types of searches and why” includes Criminal Background Checks (Social Security Number Address Locator, “Hands On” County Criminal Searches, Nationwide “US Crim” Search, and Sex Offender Search) and Verifications (Employment, Education, License, Professional & Personal).
  • “Paperless I-9 solutions” for the Employment Eligibility Verification Form “I-9 Form”  to stay compliant with government regulations and avoid fines, penalties, and even jail time.
  • “Fair Credit Reporting Act” includes notification rights if the health care employers decide not to hire applicants based on their background screening report results.
  • “Data Privacy Concerns” and protecting Personally Identifiable Information (PPI) such as full name, date of birth, SSN number, Driver’s License number, and birth certificate.
