Negligent credentialing continues to be a growing problem for hospitals and physicians. The following statistics are alarming, and further demonstrate how adverse events and non-compliance with Federal Law can be prevented with the design and management of a contemporary credentialing system by competent Medical Staff Services Professionals (MSPs).

• 32 U.S. states recognize negligent credentialing claims.
• 2,845 of the 5,823 registered hospitals in the U.S. – almost half – have reported a corrective action sanction to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB), according to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
• During the last two decades, state licensure action reports have been more than double of those from hospitals and HMOs.

“Introduction to Healthcare Credentialing” is the first part in a planned three-part series that will include “Credentialing - Converting Theory into Best Practice” and “The Pitfalls of Credentialing - Patient Safety Begins with You!” While the webinar is tailored to suit the skill level of beginners, it also serves as a refresher course for the more experienced in the audience.

At the end of the first program, participants will be able to:

• Identify the purpose for conducting practitioner credentialing.
• Understand the accreditation and regulatory bodies impacting credentialing.
• Explain the difference between primary and secondary source verification.
• Define the elements involved in conducting verifications.

Goestenkors has over 30 years experience and expertise in Medical Services Professional (MSP) development and credentialing. She also has authored the National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) newly released online program distinguishing MSP roles and responsibilities, writes a monthly column for CACTUS Software entitled “MSP Competency Network,” and contributes to numerous industry resource books, magazines, and presentations.
