In the past, one of the most challenging aspects of an employer's hiring process was finding a person who would be able to complete specified job requirements. Along with the increased competition for available jobs, many human resources professionals are now finding that an even bigger challenge is identifying applicants who include inaccurate or misleading information on their resumes.
There are many startling trends that are being uncovered by employers. For instance, job applicants are listing educational degrees that they have not attained and qualifications that they do not possess. Additionally, some applicants are exaggerating their job titles and experience, and are falsifying dates of employment with previous employers in an effort to camouflage gaps in employment. Perhaps worst of all, some job candidates list credentials and licenses that they do not actually possess. It can be difficult to detect this type of falsified information without thoroughly researching each candidate's resume.
While it may seem that the answer to this challenge may be for the hiring manager to carefully screen and research each applicant, the reality is that this is simply impossible to do when hundreds or thousands of people apply for one single position. Many human resource departments simply do not have the time or man power to check every piece of information listed on every resume.
An excellent solution to this potential problem is to enlist the help of a professional pre-employment screening firm to assist in eliminating dishonest candidates as well as those with sketchy pasts. There is a variety of companies in the marketplace who specialize in this type of pre-employment screening, and they focus on streamlining the human resources hiring process. The goal of these companies is to make the entire hiring process easier and more efficient.
In sum, it is extremely important for employers to properly screen applicant resumes to ensure that the information that they have included is accurate. While it can be time-consuming to complete this lengthy process, failing to do this can result in poor or dangerous hiring decisions for a company. Hiring a pre-employment screening company to streamline the employee screening process will free up time for employers and make the entire hiring process easier.

I think that one of the reasons behind individuals "exaggerating" the truth is because in this current economic times people are taking bigger risks to gain employment. So as you say, it's imperative that employers take the necessary steps to find out what's true on a resume, and what's not.
